As the Christmas season of advent draws near, our hearts naturally long to press pause, slow down, and behold once more the wonder of Christ’s coming. At Deep Roots and Blooming Shoots, we’re so excited to introduce our brand new The Shoot of Jesse Advent Mini Unit, a gospel-rich, Scripture-centered way for families to celebrate Christmas together.

This mini unit is a digital curriculum designed especially for children in their primary years, ideal for use in homeschool, co-ops, Sunday school, or family devotion time.

By walking day by day from Genesis to the birth of Jesus, The Shoot of Jesse Advent Mini Unit helps children see how all of Scripture points to God’s ultimate promise: Immanuel, “God with us.”

Why We Created This Shoot of Jesse Advent

We believe children should know the treasures of God’s Word from the beginning...not just the Christmas story, but all the promises God wove throughout the Old Testament, leading to Christ.

Our purpose is to help families plant deep biblical roots while nurturing early learning skills, all in a simple, hands-on format. We also included resources for the parent, a devotional just for you, so you’re not just running the show, but growing in the Word alongside your children.

What Is a Jesse Tree?

A Jesse Tree is a way to trace the lineage and promises of Jesus by hanging a symbol or ornament each day during Advent that points to a person, promise, or event in Scripture.

As Isaiah prophesied:

“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” Isaiah 11:1

Because Jesus is the “shoot” from Jesse’s line, every story in the Bible is His story. A Jesse Tree helps little hearts see that connection — from Abraham’s promise, through David’s throne, through prophets, all the way to Bethlehem.

Let's Get Crafty

One of the joys of The Shoot of Jesse Advent Mini Unit is that you can create a tangible, visual connection to each day’s truth by crafting your own ornaments. Enjoy our step by step guide!

1. Gather Supplies

2. Create Your "Shoot of Jesse" Wooden Ornaments

  1. First, you will want to purchase our digital The Shoot of Jesse Advent Mini Unit.
  2. Once you've downloaded the files onto your desktop computer, print the 3 pages of the round colored ornaments on cardstock. The file is 8.5"x11", so be sure your paper is the same size (letter size).
  3. Use this 2" round circle punch to save time when cutting out the circles! Also, if you are a perfectionist who likes perfectly round cutouts, this will be your best friend, trust me!
  4. I used these wooden 2.75" round ornaments, since they were the perfect sizes and I loved the neutral look. For adhering the circles onto the wooden ornaments, I simply used my child's Elmers Glue Stick and it worked just great. However, you can also use ModPodge for an extra seal, if you wanted added coverage! I personally like the look of the matte version.
  5. Then add your preferred twine or ribbon to match your look!
  6. Voila! Hang one ornament per day as you lead into your Scripture reading and discussion.
You can hang them on a small branch, on a wall garland, on a Christmas tree, or across a mantel. Kids especially enjoy waking each morning to see the next ornament and hearing the story behind it.

We’d love for you to journey through Advent with The Shoot of Jesse Advent Mini Unit this year. It’s a gospel-rich, creative, Scripture-filled way to root your children’s hearts in the story of God’s redemption.

If you download it and use it this season, We'd be so grateful if you snapped a picture and tagged us on Instagram. Seeing your Jesse Trees brings such joy to us!
